The Solway Coast National Landscape recently hosted a Natterjack Toad Training session delivered by Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC), helping local volunteers develop the skills needed to support one of the area’s rarest and most iconic species.
The training provided participants with an introduction to natterjack toad ecology, identification and survey techniques, alongside an understanding of the specialised dune and pond habitats the species depends upon. Successful attendees became accredited natterjack toad surveyors under ARC’s licencing, enabling them to assist with future monitoring and conservation work.
By equipping local people with the knowledge and qualifications to monitor this endangered amphibian, the training not only supports vital conservation efforts but also helps participants build a stronger connection with the special landscapes and wildlife of the Solway Coast National Landscape.
