Last week our dedicated volunteer team were out at Mawbray beach litter picking and recording everything they found as part of the Great British Beach Clean. This is a national citizen science recording project organised by the Marine Conservation Society which aims to take a snapshot of the state of the UK’s beaches.
Our volunteers spent a few hours on the beach collecting all the litter they could find in a 100m stretch of the beach. In total they recorded over 300 pieces of litter including string, cotton bud sticks, food packaging, drinks cans, rope pieces, shoes and one small army cadet!
As the results show most of these pieces were plastic. It’s difficult to say exactly where it all comes from and how it ended up on the beach, we are greatful to our volunteers for coming out and helping to remove it.
We host regular beach cleans along the Solway Coast, usually the first Monday of the month. We provide all the equipment and materials needed – we just need you to come along and join in. Check our events page for more details
