Through our Farming in Protected Landscape programme (FiPL) we have been able to support Grampus Heritage & Training with their ongoing investigation in the fascinating history of the Solway Coast National landscape.
Beginning in late January, geophysical surveying took place on the marsh, collecting a large amount of data that will be processed and interpreted back in the office. The team from Grampus Heritage and Training were searching for evidence of Hadrian’s Wall from the data and looking for clues as to the direction the wall takes.
A new trench was then opened up to investigate a circular anomaly identified in a previous survey. This revealed many interesting artifacts that are yet to be cleaned and fully identified. A cobbled area was uncovered during the dig and many piece of roman pottery were found. In the last couple of days digging exposed the corners of a timber building!
The excavation has now finished and sample have been taken back to the office for the Grampus Heritage team to analyse. We look forward to reading the reports and seeing what the data reveals!
