If you visit Crosscanonby Carr Nature Reserve you might notice that the meadow area has been cut back in preparation for spring.
This cutting is part of our long term management of the area as a wildflower meadow. The cuttings have been collected and piled around the edge of the site. This is an important step as it will mean that the main wildflower meadow doesn’t get too nutrient rich – if we left the cuttings they would rot down and put more nutrients back into the soil. The native wildflowers we planted in 2021 and 2022 like nutrient poor soils and thrive with this management.
Once the meadow is in full bloom you will see many species including yellow rattle, ox eye daisy, red clover and tufted vetch. We will be sure to update you in a couple of months!
